History

Founded in 1955 as the fourth university of the Republic of Turkey, Ege University became the first higher education institution in its region. Ege University continued its development in line with the needs of the geography in which it is located, and in 1976, the "Faculty of Social Sciences", which would later be named "Faculty of Letters", was established. With the decision of Ege University Senate dated 06.07.1976 and numbered 141/12, the department was established as the Department of History-Geography and Archaeology and was separated into History, Geography and Archaeology in 1979. At the meeting of the Faculty Board on 07.05.1979, the academic structure of the Faculty was rearranged and it was proposed to the Rectorate which was approved by the decision of the Senate dated 15.05.1979 and numbered 19/19. Thereby, the Department of History was established.
